The Blue Grotto

Located on the island of Capri, Italy, the Blue Grotto is an experience you won’t want to miss that includes singing boatmen, and an unforgettable trip into a small cave where you can swim in the crystal clear water. Before getting into the cave however, you must wait in line for the row boats to come and pick you up and it can be pretty intimidating at times with how many people are there waiting with you. But since we were with a tour guide, they rented us a boat to take up to the cave making us wait very little time for the row boats to come up and get us. Since the row boats are so small they can only fit up to about six people including the rower on board. The entrance to the blue grotto is a small opening in the cave which makes everyone in the boat, including the person rowing, lay flat or else they run the risk of hitting their head on the top of the opening. The only way you are able to enter the cave is by boat and sometimes if the water is very rough, they have to shut down the attraction because it would be too dangerous to get in and out. With this in mind, it would be a good idea if you are planning to go here to check the weather beforehand. Once inside my friends and I were amazed by the views of the cave. It is almost pitch dark inside but the water is so blue that it acts as natural light, as seen in the pictures below. Although the cave is sixty meters, or one hundred and ninety-seven feet, deep you can kind of still see the bottom since the water is so clear. And, the fun doesn’t stop there because once inside you then are given the opportunity to jump out of the boat and into the water to swim. I was nervous at first because I don’t like swimming with fish or other sea creatures, but I knew this could be an experience I might not be able to do again so I had to jump in. The man we had rowing our boat was super nice and when I wouldn’t push myself in, he did it for me. I still to this day thank him for doing that because I might not have gone in other wise and I know I would have regretted it if I didn’t. We were inside the cave for about a half hour including our time for swimming and then it was time for us to head back out and back onto our original boat. The energy inside and outside of the cave was so welcoming it left us smiling and laughing the whole time. My friend Mikaela and I were even dancing along to the catchy tunes they were singing while waiting their turn to enter the cave. This is an experience that I would recommend everyone to do if they are able to travel and visit Capri. It is relatively inexpensive compared to other excursions on this island by only charging guests fourteen euro’s to get into the cave and for the boat ride. However, swimming in the cave is extra and was five euro’s for my friends and I when we went a few years ago so prices could have changed since then. This is an unforgettable excursion that is very family-friendly and enjoyable for everyone involved. #digitalmonday
